Did you know that the history of flamenco is closely connected not only with Spain, but also with India, Africa, Latin America and the Middle East? Did you know that there are more than 100 flamenco dance styles and variations? Did you know that the essence of flamenco dance and music is rooted in the deep, often tragic experiences of the Romani people's history in Spain?
All this and much more you will be able to see and learn at the flamenco dance club "Duende"'s 10th anniversary concert "Tierra Flamenca", on Friday, 18 April at 17:00 at the Baltic International Academy in Riga, Lomonosova iela 1. The concert is planned in two parts.
The concert will feature Duende dancers, as well as Indian, belly dance and ballet dancers, and flamenco guest studios Tientos (Lithuania) and K. Shevchenko Flamenco Dance Studio (Estonia).
This weekend Latvia will switch to summer time. On the night from Saturday to Sunday, on 30 March at 03:00, clocks must be moved forward by one hour. Stay alert so there are no unwanted surprises at work on Monday morning!
This will be a purely girls' conversation (guys, sorry) - the kind where friends settle in comfortably at the dressing table and start pulling out their cosmetics cases or bags to share their experience of which beauty product is a real find. Here are a few cosmetics products that I find good enough in quality to talk about and even recommend to others.
The main character at the end of the film poses a fundamental question - does it matter? In war it is not an Estonian, a Chechen, a Georgian or a Russian who is killed - in war ordinary people are killed, each of whom has their own life, loved ones, parents or children. War takes everything; death has no nationality. A grave has no nationality.
We received this Fiskars herb growing pot as a gift last autumn, but back then there wasn't quite the same longing for greenery to plant anything in it. Now, that moment has come. Although the included instructions encouraged planting healthy greens or herbs to add to food in this 90mm wide, two-tone layered plastic container, I chose something to delight the eyes - three sprouted daffodil bulbs that were already preparing to bloom. And right on time, because after such a sunny and warm start to spring, a proper winter day has arrived with winds, snow and cold. So this little mobile sunshine on the kitchen windowsill is perfectly timed.
Planeta restaurant has given thought to three important criteria - attentive service (the guest feels expected and is not left unattended for a single moment), the interior and lighting to create the right atmosphere, and food presentation that resembles a miniature work of art. Flavour nuances are a very subjective matter, but those who appreciate European-Japanese cuisine will love it.
We decided to spend today outdoors in nature. The sun was pleasantly warm, the thermometer climbed to +10°C at midday, and not a trace of snow. Although at Pier A at Mangaļsala we did find a few relics - melting chunks of ice. Since the vegetation had not yet grown dense enough to obstruct us, and we could see where we put our feet, we explored the coastal defence artillery casemates and viewed the artillery shell vaults.
Responding to an invitation, this evening I headed to the new bistro in Riga's city centre. After an hour of watching an opening event that just couldn't seem to get going, and later listening to talk about the bistro concept while studying the gathered crowd, I simply could not get a feel for the place's concept. What exactly did its creators want to "say", and above all - who is their target audience?
I liked it unequivocally - both for its sharp visual design (a stated insight + a well-chosen illustration like a carefully designed and contextually worked advertising poster) and for its simultaneously contradictory, stereotype-toppling and truthful observations on life. The author asserts in the book that wrong decisions lead to grandiose discoveries.
This is a biographical film about the German political theorist, publicist and philosopher of Jewish origin Hannah Arendt (1906–1975) and her period of life in the USA, when she was preparing a series of reports for The New Yorker on the trial of war criminal Eichmann in Jerusalem. The articles caused a great stir in society. She allowed herself to distance herself from national identity and philosophised about evil.
