Staro Rīga 2014
In pursuit of impressions, we spent two evenings in two pleasant companies. What we unambiguously enjoyed was the light procession or parade "The Secret Life of Light" - a dynamic, fun, and attention-grabbing performance. The other installations were fairly uniform - more or less vivid projections on building facades.
This year the light festival in Riga takes place over five consecutive evenings from 14 to 18 November (from 18:00 to 23:00). The light installations are placed in the usual locations - the city's main parks and squares: Vērmaņdārzs, by the Opera, Līvu Square, Dome Square, Alberta Square. For some reason, contrary to the media advertising, it seems that this year there are fewer installations - but that is a purely subjective impression.
For the first time, the facade of Astor Riga Hotel on Meirovics Boulevard is illuminated in extraordinarily bright, colour-rich light, with an improvised circus show unfolding on it. This is best viewed from Bastejkalns, because below, large crowds move back and forth, at times completely paralysing traffic. All this bustle is accompanied by the piercing ring of the tram bell.
In pursuit of impressions, we spent two evenings in two pleasant companies. We captured what we saw with both the little Panasonic, the big Nikon, and the Samsung Galaxy smartphone (the last turned out to hold its own rather well alongside the others, and at times even surpasses them in both photo and video).
What we unambiguously enjoyed was the light procession or parade "The Secret Life of Light" - a dynamic, fun, and attention-grabbing performance. The other installations were fairly uniform - more or less vivid projections on building facades.
The music and improvised light canopy in Vērmaņdārzs - the Light Carousel - are well combined in creating the right mood. Nostalgia for the waltz and for Paris.
