She cannot stand heightened tenderness, sentimentality or delicacy - she simply does not perceive this atmosphere of the games of love. After a passion-filled night of love she is capable of behaving as though nothing had happened: not a tender word, caress or smile. She must choose her partner very carefully - the least suitable is Capricorn, the most suitable Virgo and Scorpio. Her greatest enemy is herself.
Before I had even had a chance to ask about a day when I could come in, the mechanic interrupted, saying - look, the promotion applies if the car has up to 2 weeks until its technical inspection, or if that time has just passed. Moreover, the car must be no older than 15 years. In my indignation I tried to object that the website contains entirely different information. My objection did not seem binding to the mechanic, who as a key argument mentioned that the promotion does not earn him anything extra in his salary. Well, dammit!
I noticed this film during the White Night and the day before yesterday found it online to watch carefully from opening to closing credits. The film fascinated me and made me think - why do people need spoken language, if everything can be expressed through facial expression, gesture, a glance, sound, music and dance? The body does not lie even when the spoken words are pure pretence.
Walking through Sarkandaugava, one can pass through at least three centuries and admire architecture from different eras. Here dive bars operate 25 hours a day, pairs of sneakers hang from power lines, here stands the former summer residence of Kārlis Ulmanis, Latvia's largest brewery and the Punishment Ditch where the city's witches were once drowned. More about factory history, the mental asylum regulations, 19th-century treatment methods and what Sarkandaugava looked like 300 years ago.
While searching for various materials on flamenco dance steps and performance technique, I came across information about a rather unusual fashion show. It turns out that earlier this year in Spain, the young designers' fashion festival SIMOF 2009 was held for the 14th time, where everything is devoted to the flamenco theme. Festival participants take part in the show with costumes rooted in the traditions of flamenco dancers' dress and enriched with innovative elements. Here is a small glimpse into the costume collections created by the festival participants.
White Night in Riga (12–13 September) was this year reasonably warm (around 15 degrees above zero) and full of curious observers and contemporary art performances. The already autumnal darkness of night allows one to play with illusions created by coloured light and to "see by blinking your ears," since "people, by blinking their eyes (coating the eyeball with fluid from the lacrimal glands), lose approximately 23 minutes of visual information every day."
On Thursday evening, 10 August, I attended the open class at the exotic dance centre Alegria, held at 4 E. Birznieks-Upīša Street, in the hall of the Young Technicians' Centre. Centre director Ilze Zariņa introduced four dance styles that can be learned from Alegria's teachers - belly dancing, Indian dance, flamenco, and Gypsy dance. To illustrate each dance style, there were teachers' performances (see video).
On blogs.kosmodroms.lv I found a sad story about how a ltvarhivs.lv user could not get a video to play. To myself I thought - right, a typical Apple geek who has dreamed up that Apple is the navel of the universe around which everything revolves. I boot up my MS Windows box, open ltvarhivs.lv and... a shout (!) - search doesn't work. Ahh... it turns out you have to click with the mouse. Never mind. I still couldn't find what I wanted. I had hoped to find the documentary "The Icebreaker and His Children". Let's see what is there. "Article 100." That'll do!
Today's date, or rather three 9s, has been perceived by many as a significant number that could bring certain changes or be meaningful as the start of a new phase. It turns out to be an "egotistical" number, as any number multiplied by 9 yields an intermediate sum of 9 - for example, 2×9=18=1+8=9, 3×9=27=2+7=9, and so on. No matter what transformations happen to this number, it always returns to its own prime. Now isn't that something!
In the mornings, traditionally leafing through the press, I have for some time been making a point of reading the last page of the newspaper Diena, where Egīls Zirnis jokes. As a result, a number of fine sayings have accumulated - sayings that on reading make you want to smile at yourself, at life in general, and at life in Latvia. Here I have collected some excerpts from "Zirnis Jokes" that seemed truly witty and have stuck in the memory.
