The Hidden Treasures of ltvarhivs.lv

On blogs.kosmodroms.lv I found a sad story about how a ltvarhivs.lv user could not get a video to play. To myself I thought - right, a typical Apple geek who has dreamed up that Apple is the navel of the universe around which everything revolves. I boot up my MS Windows box, open ltvarhivs.lv and... a shout (!) - search doesn't work. Ahh... it turns out you have to click with the mouse. Never mind. I still couldn't find what I wanted. I had hoped to find the documentary "The Icebreaker and His Children". Let's see what is there. "Article 100." That'll do!

Oh! A virus. Impossible! This is ltvarhivs.lv after all. It is an apollo.lv creation. Hmm... We tell it to block the suspicious piece of code and carry on.

Next surprise. What?! Could be harmful to your computer? Dilemma... According to Microsoft (default action) one should press No. Maybe risk it? I pressed Yes.

Next. Wait, they'll be asking for money in a moment - what else is "nonsecure"?

Well, never mind - I start looking for the FAQ. Found it. But, despite having a degree in computer science, I still couldn't work out what I needed to watch the video.

1) whether the computer has administrator rights (required by Windows Media Player)
2. All video materials uploaded to the LTV archive are protected (encrypted). The chosen protection solution is built on Windows software, which does not work with other operating systems (OS), for example Macintosh, etc.

1. I don't know how to find out "whether the computer has administrator rights" :( On my computer there is an MS Windows Vista licence sticker. Also on my computer there is a can of beer and a bag of crisps :(
2. I don't know what Windows software is :(. Perhaps the author meant Microsoft software - in which case, which one?
3. I don't know what an operating system is :(. Let alone the abbreviation - OS.

I open www.letonika.lv:

operating environment
The combination of hardware, software and data required for the functioning of a computer.
RU операционная среда

Aha, now it's clear - it won't work on Macintosh computers... (Apple is an American computer technology company; its best-known products are Macintosh personal computers - wikipedia.org). But on which computers will it work?

Perhaps what was meant was - operating system, and the abbreviation is OS?

Solution. The trick is that when the "apollo payment" window opens, you select Apollo registered user or Other internet user and click continue. The payment options will then open. :)

Where the code will be sent I don't know - by email or to a phone. Nor do I understand why one has to provide a first name and surname. After these operations, theoretically it should work.

P.S. Interesting - do the developers of this contraption think that in everyday life people use (if they use) MS Windows with administrator rights?
