What Does Your Desk Say About You?

The environment we create around ourselves can tell us a great deal. Whether we like it or not, we unconsciously shape the space around us in our own image and likeness. It is sometimes good to tear your eyes away from the work computer monitor and cast a glance over your desk.

The environment we create around ourselves can tell us a great deal. Whether we like it or not, we unconsciously shape the space around us in our own image and likeness. It is sometimes good to tear your eyes away from the work computer monitor and cast a glance over your desk. We also remember those moments when a new employee is hired and the other colleagues, walking past their desk, curiously look it over to notice something that will "tell" them more about the new person in the team.

So what is your desk like?

Type 1. Chaotic

The desk is piled with papers and notes of various sizes, unopened and opened envelopes, newspapers and magazines, and empty coffee cups.

You are a creative personality for whom the flow of thought matters and who doesn't get hung up on trifles - but from the outside you appear to be an unreliable, nervous, and excessively scatter-brained employee.

Tip! Don't try to become a pedant, but some basic order should be introduced. Use various small shelves to sort papers. It is also advisable to start using a planner to discipline yourself. Force yourself to review your desk once a week and throw away everything unnecessary - old press publications, envelopes, unneeded written notes, etc.

Personally, I find it helpful to maintain order in everything by adhering to the motto: "Use it, love it, or throw it out!"

Type 2. Tidy and Non-Committal

Only the absolute essentials are on the desk - nothing superfluous. A computer, a planner, a calendar, a pen holder - everything else tucked away in the desk drawers, invisible to outside eyes.

You are a serious, goal-oriented personality - but from the outside you appear unsociable and lacking a sense of humour.

Tip! At least put a photo of a pet on the desk or on the wall if family photographs seem too personal. A bowl of fruit or sweets would also break down the unsociability barrier - who among colleagues wouldn't enjoy slipping a hand into a treat bowl placed practically right under their nose.

Type 3. Stylish and Fun

Your phone, pen holder, and laptop are in coordinated colours. Funny cards or a calendar with witty insights and quotes for each day are placed on the desk. The to-do list has a jagged edge.

You are very sociable and reliable - but it is hard for others to discern high professionalism in you from the outside. To some you may seem superficial.

Tip! Let the joke cards stay for home décor. If you can't do without knick-knacks or funny figurines, then choose only one or two - but with special meaning, for example, brought back from a trip to a distant land. On the wall, hang a refined work of art or a reproduction in a tasteful frame, to give others the impression that there are also "deeper waters" to be found in you.
