Sitar
A musical instrument resembling a guitar, but its sound is saturated with an Eastern character. The only information available in Latvia about this remarkable Indian instrument is that the sitar was introduced to the Western world by Ravi Shankar and G. Harrison from The Beatles. Enchanted by a melody performed by Anoushka Shankar, I decided to explore this instrument more closely.

Sitar (sitar) - a multi-stringed Indian musical instrument with a rich, orchestral sound. Its name derives from Turkish - "si" meaning "seven" and "tar" meaning "string". It thus consists fundamentally of 7 strings, but also has 11 to 13 resonating strings. It is precisely these resonating strings that give the sitar its distinctive sound, setting this instrument apart from other stringed instruments.

The sitar in its modern visual form emerged in India in the 13th century. A multi-stringed instrument with a long neck, to the top of which a sound resonator made from a gourd was attached. The sitar was lavishly decorated with rosewood and ivory. The strings were plucked with a special plectrum worn on the index finger.
