Homely, soft, confortable, luxurious and sophisticated, warm and your feet cooling, worn or only for special guests carefully stored – for anybody your sweet slippers. Now, when I’m at home, I wear my mom’s made crochet slippers. Although, I have always been fascinated by Victorian period lady slippers on luxurious heel with vintage rose design. In some centuries they have been as practical shoes, as symbol and component of rituals. What is the history of slippers?
It turn out, that they have come from East, exactly, appeared in one of inhabitant sultan harems. Then slippers were like a symbol of captivity, because even very freedom and constancy lovable concubine, didn’t dare to run away from harem to rocky road, in thin and from feet easy slippering, slippers. As for it, slippers were very comfortable and soft, when it was needed to sit down on low chairs, in pose with crossed legs above you. They were easy to take off, stepping on expensive Persian carpets.
They were very comfortable footwear, which gave a chance for philosophical thoughts, after long trip, not giving discomfort for feet and giving chance to take a rest. This functionality was the best reason, why slipper wearing tradition went to medieval Europe. But in 16th century slippers here had a new symbolical meaning – they were like married friend symbol of loyalty.
The brightest upswing in their history, slippers had in 18th century France. Of course, it all happened in glory and richness sinking kings’ court and near it. In lady boudoir were different size slippers – delicate, filled with swan feathers, gilled and with big lumps and with a little bit snubbed toecap.
19th century made slippers exactly for very practical and in every house needed thing. With every year they became much comfortable, natural or with unnatural material difference, form design, which as possible it could be, repeated its owners foot form, not visual shine.
